Garuda Purana :The Soul’s Journey After Death and the Call to Righteous Living (Part 3)

The Soul’s Journey, Yama’s Judgment, and the Vast Design of the Universe**

Introduction

This third part continues the profound spiritual exploration begun earlier, focusing on the post-death journey of the soul, the law of karma, the realms governed by Dharmaraj, and reflections on how ancient scriptures and modern cosmic discoveries echo one another. The narration moves carefully from scriptural metaphysics to contemporary observations of the universe, encouraging discernment rather than blind belief.

The Soul’s Journey After Death

According to the Garuda Purana, after death the individual soul begins a long and arduous journey through subtle realms.

The subtle body is gradually formed, and the soul traverses the Vaitarani River, a symbolic and experiential passage representing karmic consequences.

  • Souls who practiced charity, compassion, and cow donation (gau-daan) experience assistance.

  • Those who ignored dharma, Brahmins, ancestors, or selfless acts face the journey alone.

  • Every action—good or bad—remains bound to the soul, yielding inevitable results.

The soul experiences hunger, thirst, fear, and hope, sustained temporarily by offerings (shraddha) performed by descendants, especially during the first year after death.

Sixteen Towns and the Completion of One Year

The journey spans 86,580 miles, passing through sixteen symbolic towns. At the end of one year, the soul relinquishes its earlier subtle body and proceeds toward Yamapur, escorted by divine messengers.

Here, the truth is emphasized: No deed is ever wasted. Every thought for world welfare purifies the atmosphere.

Judgment in Yamalok

Upon arrival, the soul faces judgment under Yama, with detailed records presented by Chitragupta.

All actions—spoken, hidden, intentional, or unconscious—are revealed.

  • Wealth, poverty, status, or power offer no exemption.

  • Dharma alone determines the path ahead.

  • Sinners are shown terrifying forms of justice, reflecting their own accumulated fear and guilt.

The Hells and Karmic Consequences

The Garuda Purana describes 84 lakh hells, with 21 principal hells for major sins.

Punishments are not acts of cruelty but mechanisms of purification, allowing the soul to exhaust karmic residue before rebirth.

Common causes of suffering include:

  • Denial of food or water to others

  • Disrespect toward guests and ancestors

  • Absence of charity or pilgrimage

  • Ego-driven family attachment without dharma

Eventually, after purification, the soul returns to human birth, continuing its journey toward liberation.

Ancient Dharma and Universal Order

A powerful comparison is drawn between:

  • Cosmic law (ṛta) in scriptures

  • Rule-based systems seen in modern structures (even likened metaphorically to reality shows)

Each universe, galaxy, and realm functions under distinct but precise laws.

Modern science reinforces this awe.

The James Webb Space Telescope, launched by NASA, allows humanity to observe light emitted over 13 billion years ago.

  • Light from the Sun takes 8 minutes to reach Earth.

  • Light from the Andromeda Galaxy takes 2.5 million years.

  • In a tiny patch of sky once thought empty, over 10,000 galaxies were discovered.

This confirms what scriptures long suggested:

Creation is unimaginably vast, layered, and beyond complete comprehension.

Spiritual Sensitivity and Discernment

The discourse briefly references individuals who claim to channel spirits or predict global events.
The emphasis remains clear:

  • Discernment is essential

  • Not every message deserves amplification

  • Spiritual strength comes from inner purity, yoga, and peace, not fascination with fear

Historical figures like TB Joshua are mentioned cautiously, acknowledging their influence without judgment.

Meditative Conclusion: World Welfare Above All

The session closes with a collective meditation, releasing stress, desires, and karmic burdens.

Core resolutions emphasized:

  • Body, mind, and wealth for world welfare

  • Good thoughts for all beings

  • Neutrality, purity, and remembrance of the Supreme

The vision culminates in imagining Earth surrounded by vibrations of supreme peace, extending hundreds of kilometers into space.

Final Reflection

Ancient scriptures and modern telescopes together reveal one truth:

The universe is ordered, conscious, and responsive to human action.

Understanding this inspires responsibility—not fear—and directs the soul toward peace, balance, and liberation.
