2015, The Vast Subtle World, Souls, Religions and the Journey Beyond Death (सूक्ष्म वतन जगत के रहस्य। आत्मा की यात्रा।)

The spiritual sciences of India have long spoken about multiple dimensions of existence beyond the visible material universe. According to these teachings, the physical world is only one layer of reality. Beyond it exists the subtle world (Sukshma Jagat), causal worlds, celestial regions, lower worlds, and many spiritual dimensions inhabited by different kinds of souls, sages, divine beings, and subtle entities.

This article explores the vast structure of the subtle world, the condition of souls after death, the role of desires, religious dimensions in the subtle realm, the journey of souls after death, and the hidden relationship between the gross world and subtle world. The knowledge presented here is based on spiritual explanations associated with Param Shanti teachings and similar knowledge streams connected to Bapuji Dashrathbhai Patel.

What Is the Subtle World (Sukshma Jagat)?

The subtle world is an invisible dimension existing beyond the physical world. Human beings living on Earth normally perceive only the gross material universe through the five senses, but spiritual teachings explain that existence continues beyond physical death.

When a human soul leaves the physical body, it enters the subtle world along with an astral body made of three subtle elements:

  • Ether (Akash)

  • Air (Vayu)

  • Fire (Agni)

The soul no longer possesses a gross physical body, but continues existence through this subtle astral form.

Souls that are spiritually elevated, knowledgeable, pure, and developed through meditation and spiritual understanding can rise into higher subtle regions more easily. However, souls heavily attached to desires, emotions, possessions, relationships, and worldly identity often remain trapped near Earth after death.

What Happens to Souls After Death?

According to this knowledge, many souls remain near their homes, temples, religious places, or locations of attachment because they lack knowledge beyond physical existence.

For example:

  • Souls attached to temples may remain in temples.

  • Souls attached to churches may remain around churches.

  • Souls attached to mosques may remain around mosques.

  • Souls attached to family remain near homes.

  • Souls attached to gurus remain connected to the guru’s subtle field.

This is because consciousness after death continues according to one’s beliefs, desires, emotional attachments, and sanskars.

The Illusory Souls Near Earth

Within approximately 200 kilometers above Earth exists a dense layer inhabited by illusion-bound souls possessing subtle bodies of ether, air, and fire.

These souls are unable to travel upward because desires increase the heaviness of the air element in their subtle body.

The teachings explain that Earth’s gravitational influence operates strongly within this region, and the air element within the subtle body becomes attracted toward Earth. As a result, many souls remain trapped in near-Earth dimensions. This explanation symbolically connects spiritual bondage with vibrational heaviness. Desires, attachments, fear, ego, anger, greed, emotional dependence, and bodily identification create density in consciousness.

The Nature of the Astral Body

According to the discourse, the subtle or astral body is not made of the five gross elements like the physical body. Instead, it consists primarily of ether, air, and fire.

The weight of desires affects the movement of the soul. When desires become strong, the air element in the astral body becomes heavier, making it difficult for the soul to rise upward into higher subtle dimensions.

Because of Earth’s gravitational influence within approximately 200 kilometers above the Earth, many souls remain trapped within this zone

The Effort Required to Enter Higher Subtle Worlds

Great sages and saints guide trapped souls to forget bodily identity, worldly attachments, and emotional bondage.

The soul must gradually:

  • Forget attachment to the body

  • Release family attachment

  • Release worldly expectations

  • Drop unfulfilled desires

  • Forget the illusion-bound world

The teaching states: “Iccha matram avidya” — desire itself is ignorance.

Only when the soul becomes free from desires can it rise upward into higher subtle dimensions. The soul then develops a strong inner aspiration to move toward higher subtle regions. At that stage, divine teachers, Sadgurus, and spiritually elevated beings help the soul cross the 200-kilometer boundary into higher subtle realms.

Layers of the Subtle World

The subtle world is described as consisting of many layers or regions through which souls gradually evolve.

These include stages such as:

  • 200–500 km

  • 500–1000 km

  • 1000–2000 km

  • 10,000 km

  • 100,000 km and beyond

Each layer contains different spiritual environments and learning systems. There are subtle ashrams run by sages, saints, ascetics, and spiritual masters where souls undergo purification, austerity, learning, and development. Souls continue spiritual effort day and night while moving from one subtle level to another.

The journey is gradual and consciousness-based.

At different levels exist:

  • Ashrams

  • Hermitages

  • Spiritual schools

  • Sages and saints

  • Ascetic beings

These spiritual beings guide souls in their onward journey.

How Belief Systems Limit Souls

An important teaching in this discourse explains that souls continue to remain limited by their belief systems even after death.

Sages and spiritual masters explain to souls that remembrance of the illusory world restricts spiritual progress.

The subtle world a soul enters is shaped by:

  • Expectations

  • Religious conditioning

  • Emotional attachment

  • Faith systems

  • Desires

  • Mental impressions (sanskars)

Thus, the soul experiences realities compatible with its consciousness.

Religions in the Subtle World

A remarkable teaching in this discourse is that all religions exist in the subtle world as well. Within a range of approximately one crore kilometers above Earth exist hermitages, religious centers, and spiritual communities belonging to many religions.

These include:

  • Temples

  • Churches

  • Mosques

  • Ashrams

  • Spiritual learning centers

All spiritual masters and teachers are said to possess subtle hermitages in these dimensions. The discourse further explains that spiritual masters take birth on Earth for the welfare of humanity while also existing in subtle dimensions simultaneously.

The Extent of the Subtle World

The subtle world is described as extending throughout a vast cosmic region around the Sun.

The teaching explains:

  • Earth and Sun are approximately 15 crore kilometers apart.

  • The subtle world extends roughly one crore kilometers beyond Earth’s region.

  • Altogether, the subtle world spans approximately 16 crore kilometers around the Sun.

This description presents the subtle world not merely as a symbolic realm, but as an organized multidimensional cosmic structure interconnected with the solar system.

Heaven, Hell, and the Changing Spiritual System

The discourse explains that older scriptures described Yamdoots carrying souls to heaven or hell.

However, according to this spiritual explanation, the system has changed over time.

Heaven is described as existing within subtle worlds, while hell exists in lower dimensions called Patal Lok.

Patal Lok represents states of heaviness within the five elements of the body and consciousness.

Below Earth are described seven lower worlds:

  • Atal

  • Vital

  • Sutal

  • Rasatal

  • Talatal

  • Mahatal

  • Patal

Below these exist many hellish regions (narak).

These descriptions are interpreted spiritually as vibrational states connected to the quality of consciousness.

What Determines the Soul’s Destination After Death?

The teachings emphasize that whatever a person remembers during the final moments of life greatly influences the soul’s next experience.

Whoever or whatever occupies the consciousness at death becomes magnetically connected to the soul.

Thus:

  • A devotee remembering a guru may experience the guru’s subtle field.

  • A religious person may encounter beings of that religious dimension.

  • A worldly person may remain Earth-bound.

The discourse explains that souls connected to a guru may be received by subtle entities associated with that guru’s tradition.

Angels, Ghosts, and Farishtas

A distinction is made between ghosts (bhoot), subtle beings, and higher angelic beings.

According to the discourse:

  • Ordinary subtle entities may still remain connected with Earth.

  • Farishtas or higher angelic beings belong to causal dimensions rather than lower subtle layers.

  • Not every spirit appearing after death is a divine angel.

This distinction is important because many people misunderstand subtle experiences and assume all spiritual apparitions are divine.

The Thirteen-Day Period After Death

The discourse explains that after death, the soul often remains near the home until the thirteen-day death rituals are completed.

This concept exists in many Indian traditions and reflects the transitional state of consciousness immediately after death.

During this period, the soul gradually adjusts to separation from the physical body and begins its onward journey.

The Role of Gurus in the Subtle World

Souls arriving in subtle worlds are often guided by gurus, saints, or religious masters connected to their belief systems.

The soul experiences joy upon seeing familiar spiritual forms and ashrams.

However, the journey does not end there.

The guru or spiritual guide may continue helping the soul progress toward higher celestial levels if the soul desires further spiritual evolution.

Religious gurus thus serve as transitional guides in the subtle realms.

Beyond Religion, Caste, and Community

One of the most profound teachings in this discourse is that beyond approximately 16 crore kilometers, the soul enters regions beyond religion, caste, sect, or community.

At these higher levels:

  • Religious identity dissolves

  • Social identity dissolves

  • Community identity dissolves

  • Spiritual universality begins

The discourse explains that there exists a higher layer and higher guru-consciousness completely free from all religious boundaries, but very few people know about it.

This aligns deeply with Behad Ka Gyan — the limitless spiritual knowledge beyond narrow religious structures.

The Connection Between Gross World and Subtle World

According to the discourse, everything visible in the physical world also exists in corresponding subtle forms.

If one lakh religions exist on Earth, similar structures exist in the subtle world.

The teaching further explains that many gurus and spiritual leaders originate from subtle worlds and take birth on Earth together with followers to establish religions, communities, and spiritual systems.

This suggests that subtle worlds continuously influence human civilization, culture, religion, collective thought, wars, disasters, and social evolution.

Divine Vision of the Gross and Subtle Worlds

The discourse concludes with a profound statement:

A divine vision revealed that whatever exists in the gross physical world also exists in subtle worlds.

This teaching presents the universe as a multidimensional continuum where consciousness, belief, karma, desires, and spiritual evolution shape the realities experienced by souls.
