The Birth of Death: How and Why Was Death Created? A Spiritual Explanation from Behad Ka Gyan
According to the spiritual knowledge explained by Bapuji, death was not part of the original creation. In the earliest ages of the Brahmand (cosmic universe), beings existed in divine subtle forms made from Param Tattva — the supreme subtle elements. Souls were luminous, powerful, and free from the bondage of the heavy five gross elements. Death as humans know it today did not exist.
This discourse explains how creation descended gradually from divine realms into gross physical existence, how souls lost their original power, and how eventually Yamraj, Yamlok, and the system of death had to be established.
The Creation of the Brahmand
Bapuji explains that the owner of the Brahmand is Shiv Nirakar — the formless supreme Shiv. From Shiv Nirakar emerged Shiv Aakari, and through the union of Shiv and Shakti, Vishnu was created. From the navel of Vishnu emerged Brahma. Brahma then created the Saptarishis and the seven lokas through divine sankalp (thought power). The first beings created were Param Purush — supreme subtle beings.
Their:
Souls were made of Param Prakash (supreme divine light)
Bodies were made of Param Tattva
Their existence consisted of Param Akash, Param Vayu, and Param Agni
At that time creation was not physical like today’s Earth. There was no mud, no dense matter, and no gross earthly body. The first creation existed in divine subtle realms.
The Age of the Farishtas
The first beings were like farishtas (angelic beings). Bapuji says he has seen these beings directly in yogic states. These beings did not experience death in the human sense.
Before the creation of death:
There was no Yamlok
There was no Yamraj
Souls were not trapped in bodies
There was no suffering connected with separation from the body
The earliest devas and farishtas existed in highly subtle forms. Even devtas of those times were very different from today’s devtas. Present devtas also eventually perish during Mahapralaya, but the earliest farishtas existed in extremely subtle divine states.
For the first ten years of Brahma’s time span of creation, beings remained primarily in Param Tattva forms. Gradually, existence descended from Param Tattva into the three subtle elements:
Akash (ether)
Vayu (air)
Agni (fire)
Then gradually the beings that later came to be known as devtas emerged.
How Earth and Humans Were Formed
Above Vishnulok existed the world of Param Tattvas — Vaikunth. But gradually souls descended downward into lower and denser worlds. Eventually Brahma created Earth. At first Earth itself was very light and subtle compared to today’s dense material Earth. Human bodies were also extremely light because they still contained a large amount of Param Tattva within them. Onto this earth, the devta began to descend. They moved from three elements into five elements. They moved from avyakt — the unmanifest, subtle form — into vyakt — the manifest, visible form. Step by step, they entered the human form.
The structure of the body gradually evolved:
First came bodies of pure Param Tattva
Then bodies composed partly of Param Tattva and partly of the three subtle elements
Later came bodies with coverings of water and earth elements
But initially:
The water and earth coverings were very thin
Souls possessed immense spiritual power
Bodies were not heavy or trapped
Because the soul still possessed divine power, whenever a being wished to leave Earth and return upward, it could do so through sankalp. The soul could transform its body from the five elements back into subtle elemental forms and ascend upward again. This was the original state of Iccha Mrityu — voluntary departure from the body.
The Beginning of Decline
Gradually the situation changed.
Population on Earth increased. Human families and living beings multiplied. Souls continued descending deeper into gross material existence. The five elements became heavier inside the body, especially:
Earth, Water, Gross matter
The human body became increasingly dense and imprisoned within material nature.
Bapuji explains that originally souls were:
Sato-pradhan (pure)
Then became Rajo-pradhan
Finally became Tamo-pradhan
As souls lost their original spiritual strength: They could no longer easily leave the body. They became attached to the body. Moh and Maya increased. Souls forgot the knowledge of ascending back upward This marked the great spiritual fall of humanity.
Why Death Had to Be Created
As Earth became crowded and unstable, beings continued arriving but could no longer return upward.
Originally beings did not truly “die.” They consciously exited the body and ascended back into subtle realms.
But once souls became spiritually weak and materially attached:
They no longer wanted to leave the body
They forgot the method of separation
They became trapped in gross physical existence
At that stage Brahma established:
Yamlok
Yamraj
The system of death
Death therefore was not originally part of creation. It was introduced later as a cosmic management system after souls became trapped in tamo-pradhan existence.
The Duty of Yamraj
Bapuji explains that Yamraj’s role was to remove souls whose time on Earth had ended. Earlier many souls resisted leaving the body because attachment had become strong. Therefore Yamraj’s messengers would forcibly pull souls out of their bodies. They would essentially say: “Your time is complete. Come now.” This became necessary because most souls no longer possessed the spiritual knowledge required to consciously leave the body.
Satyug and Iccha Mrityu
According to the discourse:
In Satyug Prithvi Raja ruled for 40,000 years
Human lifespan was one lakh years
In that age:
Souls still possessed the boon of Iccha Mrityu
Yamraj did not need to come
Souls voluntarily left their bodies
Bapuji even says: “When Satyug exists on Earth, Yamraj is on vacation.” Only toward the later stages of Treta Yuga did Yamraj begin actively functioning for humanity.
The Creation of the Animal Cycle
As living beings multiplied further, different species were created in cycles.
According to the discourse:
One animal was created to consume another
Then another predator species was created
Then further chains of creatures emerged
Thus the food-chain system developed gradually over time. Yamraj was not involved in Animal daeth.
Souls Became Trapped on Earth
Many souls originally came to Earth only temporarily, like travellers visiting another realm.
But once they entered heavy material bodies:
They became trapped
They forgot the upward path
They became attached to earthly existence
They could not return to higher realms
This, according to Bapuji, is one of the deepest causes behind human suffering and the creation of death itself.
Rishis, Munis, and the Lost Knowledge
Bapuji explains that in the early stages humanity did not possess knowledge about how to consciously leave the body and ascend upward. Later: Rishis, Munis, Yogis appeared and began rediscovering methods of spiritual ascent. But by then humanity had already descended deeply into material consciousness.
The Brahmand Is Always Changing
According to Behad Ka Gyan:
The Brahmand is constantly transforming
Infinite cycles of Satyug, Treta, Dwapar, and Kalyug have already occurred
Creation continually evolves through subtle and gross realms
Bapuji says with end of mOnarchy on earth democracy system have been started. Similarly every process pattern keeps changing
All major changes on Earth first arise from the Sookshma Jagat (subtle world). Physical events are only reflections of deeper cosmic transformations.
