2018, Self-Realization vs God-Realization: Difference Between Atma and Paramatma & Effect of Fear, Ego and Desire (आत्मा & परमात्मा में अंतर| Effect of Fear, Ego & Desire)
Introduction
Self-Realization (Atma Gyan) and God-Realization (Paramatma Gyan) are two of the most discussed spiritual topics in the world. Many philosophies describe God as energy, while others describe God as light, consciousness, or omnipresent power. However, confusion arises when people consider energy itself as God without understanding the original source of that energy.
Ancient Rishis and Munis devoted their lives to discovering the truth of existence. Through meditation, penance, and awakening of inner consciousness, they tried to understand the nature of the soul (Atma) and the Supreme Soul (Paramatma). The fundamental question remains:
Who am I? Where have I come from? What is the difference between soul and Supreme Soul?
Understanding this difference is the foundation of spiritual awakening and liberation.
Two Types of Knowledge: Atma Gyan and Paramatma Gyan
According to spiritual traditions, there are two types of knowledge:
Knowledge of the Soul (Atma Gyan)
Knowledge of the Supreme Soul (Paramatma Gyan)
Ancient sages referred to the body as Jadd (matter) and the inner conscious power as Chaitanya Shakti (conscious energy). The body is physical and temporary, while the conscious power within the body is living spiritual energy. In ancient scriptures, this conscious energy was called Chaitanya Shakti, which modern scientists describe as energy.
There are two types of energies described:
Para Shakti (higher conscious power)
Apara Shakti (lower material power)
The soul belongs to Para Shakti. To awaken this inner conscious energy, sages practiced meditation, awakened Kundalini, activated Chakras, and focused on the third eye.
Many traditions believed:
“I am Brahm” “I am Shiva” “I am that Supreme”
These statements attempted to express unity between the soul and the supreme reality. However, misunderstanding occurs when people assume the soul itself is the Supreme God.
Is God Omnipresent in Every Particle?
Some philosophies state that God is present everywhere — in humans, animals, birds, and even in every particle of matter. But an important question arises: If God is present in every being, then why do humans commit sins such as cheating, stealing, harming others, or living in ignorance?
God is described as: Satyam Shivam Sundaram (Truth, purity, and divine beauty.)
If God is perfect truth and purity, then human actions filled with ego, fear, greed, and ignorance show that the soul is not yet in its pure divine state. The soul is a creation of the Supreme, but it is not the Supreme itself.
Self-Realization Comes Before God-Realization
Before knowing God, one must know oneself. Self-realization begins with the fundamental questions:
· Who am I?
· Where have I come from?
· From which element (Tatva) am I created?
· What is the potential of the soul?
Self-realization means understanding that: “I am not the body, I am the soul.”
The soul operates through: Mind (Mann), Intellect (Buddhi), Sanskar (impressions)
Because the soul becomes attached to body consciousness, it forgets its original nature. To realize the soul, attention must move away from body consciousness and towards soul consciousness.
Role of Meditation and Yoga
Meditation is often misunderstood. Meditation is not merely sitting silently; meditation is Yoga — connection.
Different types of Yoga exist: Karma Yoga, Raja Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Dhyan Yoga
Raja Yoga reveals the secrets of existence:
· Who created the universe?
· Who is the owner of the universe?
· Why was creation made?
· What is the purpose of the soul?
Self-realization begins when a person knows: “I am a soul.” God-realization happens after understanding the Supreme source of the soul.
Why Ancient Rishis Could Not Fully Realize God
Many sages performed penance for thousands of years. They awakened chakras and kundalini. They opened the subtle body. They experienced out-of-body states. Yet many could not attain complete God-realization.
Why? Because awakening inner power alone is not sufficient. The soul also requires connection with the Supreme Source of power. Without connection to the Supreme Authority, the soul cannot attain complete liberation (moksha).
Journey of the Soul Across Universe and Multiverse
The soul is not limited to the physical body. The soul belongs to a higher dimension of existence. The soul originates beyond the physical universe, beyond galaxies, and even beyond the multiverse.
Self-realization includes understanding:
· Origin of the soul
· Journey of the soul
· Purpose of birth
· Structure of universe and multiverse
· Connection between soul and Supreme Soul
This knowledge goes beyond ordinary science and beyond conventional religious teachings.
Obstacles in Self-Realization: Fear, Ego and Desire
Three major obstacles prevent spiritual awakening: Fear, Ego, Desire.
Fear prevents the soul from exploring truth. Humans fear society more than they fear ignorance. Desires increase continuously: One car becomes two cars. Material goals increase. Focus remains on body and status. As desires increase, attention moves away from soul consciousness. Ego creates ignorance. Ignorance creates attachment to the material world. Just like a pig feels comfortable in mud, humans become comfortable in ignorance. Because of attachment to comfort and identity, the soul does not try to cross the limitations of the mind.
Role of Karma in Birth and Death
Karma determines the cycle of birth and death. Every soul carries records of many births known as Sanchit Karma. These karmic impressions influence present life experiences. Both good karma and bad karma bind the soul. To attain liberation: Both positive and negative karmic bondage must be dissolved. Self-realization helps the soul understand karmic patterns and move beyond them. Without self-knowledge, the cycle of birth and death continues.
Theory of Karma and Destiny
Destiny is not fixed permanently. Destiny is created through karma. Different souls have different destinies because they have performed different karmas. According to spiritual wisdom: Karma is greater than destiny. By changing karmas, future destiny can be transformed. Therefore, liberation is possible through conscious transformation.
Importance of Spiritual Knowledge Beyond Rituals
Many people believe spiritual knowledge can be obtained only through rituals or external practices. However, spiritual knowledge requires understanding:
· Nature of soul, Nature of Supreme Soul
· Structure of creation
· Purpose of life
· Law of karma
Knowledge is not obtained merely by external religious practices. Knowledge requires inner awakening. To become the soul-conscious being, one must move beyond mind-centered living.
Jeevan Mukti: Liberation While Living
Liberation does not only occur after death. True liberation is Jeevan Mukti — liberation while living. When the soul realizes its true nature and connects with the Supreme Source, it becomes free from bondage of karma. The Bhagavad Gita teaches: Remember the Supreme. Become soul conscious Purify karmas, Attain liberation
Self-realization leads to God-realization.
God-realization leads to liberation.
Transformation of Human Consciousness
Human beings have two possibilities: To live like animals & To rise toward divine consciousness
Transformation requires: Reducing Tamoguna (inertia), Reducing Rajoguna (restlessness), Increasing Satoguna (purity and balance)
By focusing on soul consciousness, transformation becomes possible. Change can happen at any age. Spiritual awakening can begin even at young age when understanding develops.
Role of Knowledge in Spiritual Evolution
Spiritual knowledge (Gyan) is essential for transformation.
· Spiritual knowledge includes: Knowledge of Atma, Knowledge of Paramatma, Knowledge of creation, Knowledge of karma, Knowledge of consciousness
Through knowledge, the soul gains power.> Through power, the soul transforms.> Through transformation, the soul becomes beneficial for the world.
Final Message
Self-realization and God-realization are both possible. But the journey begins when a person decides to change.
The soul contains immense power but remains unaware of its own potential.
When the soul recognizes its original nature, it becomes peaceful, powerful, and beneficial for the world.
Spread the awareness of supreme peace so that mind, intellect, and sanskars become filled with divine purity.
