2018, Power of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra (महामृत्युंजय मंत्र की शक्ति| सनातन धर्म )

Introduction

The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is one of the most well-known mantras in Sanatan Dharma. It is often believed to protect from untimely death, remove diseases, and provide spiritual strength. Many devotees chant this mantra 108 times daily with faith that it grants peace, healing, and divine protection.

However, from a deeper spiritual perspective, questions arise:

  • What is the real meaning of immortality described in scriptures?

  • What is the duration of a Kalpa?

  • Does the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra still hold the same power in Kaliyug?

  • How does mantra science relate to the concept of the soul and the multiverse?

This article explores these questions through the story of Markandeya Rishi and a broader spiritual understanding of cosmic transformation.

Story of Markandeya Rishi and the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra

According to Shiva Purana, there was a sage whose son Markandeya was destined to die at the age of sixteen. The sage prayed to Lord Shiva for protection. Naradji advised deep devotion, yog and worship of Mahadev. Markandeya Rishi performed intense penance and continuously chanted the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra. When Yamdoots came to take his life, they could not succeed because he was absorbed in devotion to Lord Shiva. Yamraj himself appeared, but Lord Shiva appeared and declared that anyone who is deeply absorbed in His worship cannot be taken away at that moment. As a result, Markandeya received the boon of immortality for one Kalpa.

This story has led many people to believe that the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra has the power to protect life and remove suffering.

Power of Mantras in Ancient Times

Ancient scriptures describe that divine beings/ dieties  provided own respective mantras that could fulfill desires such as:

  • Protection from danger

  • Blessings for children

  • Health benefits

  • Spiritual advancement

Examples are given that through mantra power, Kunti received sons such as Karna (from Sun God) and the Pandavas. Rishi Ashtvakra had given these special Mantras to Kunti. Thus, mantras were believed to give desired results. Bapuji says that in earlier Yugas, it is believed that spiritual powers were stronger because human consciousness and environment were more subtle and pure.

Meaning of Kalpa in Cosmic Time

A Kalpa is described as one day of Brahma.

One Kalpa = 1000 Chatur Yugas

1 Chatur Yuga = four Yugas (Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dwapar Yuga, Kali Yuga)= 4.32 billion years.

Therefore:

  • One Kalpa equals about 4.32 billion years.

  • Including day and night of Brahma, the duration becomes approximately 8.64 billion years.

This shows that the concept of time in Sanatan Dharma operates on a cosmic scale far beyond human lifespan.

Why Mantra Power is Said to Have Changed in Kaliyug

According to Bapuji, time continuously changes across the universe. Just as political systems changed from monarchy to democracy on Earth, spiritual systems are also believed to have evolved.

Bapuji suggested that:

  • Powers that existed in earlier Yugas may not function in the same way today.

  • Human bodies made of five elements have become denser over time.

  • Environmental changes affected the strength of the soul’s expression through the body.

  • Many ancient practices are now understood symbolically rather than literally.

Therefore, physical immortality through mantra repetition is not considered possible in the mortal world. Even divine incarnations such as Ram and Krishna did not keep a permanent physical body. The body is composed of five elements, and everything formed from these elements undergoes change and dissolution.

Human Lifespan Across Yugas

Spiritual texts describe variation in lifespan across Yugas:

  • Satya Yuga – lifespan up to 100,000 years

  • Treta Yuga – lifespan gradually reduced

  • Dwapar Yuga – lifespan further reduced

  • Kaliyug – lifespan significantly shorter

As time progressed, environmental and energetic conditions became heavier, affecting the strength and longevity of the human body.

Universe, Multiverse, and Spiritual Evolution

The discourse explains that Vedas, Upanishads, and Puranas describe events within one universe. However, the universe itself is considered a small unit within a larger multiverse. It is suggested that knowledge systems and religions evolved over long periods and were influenced by different civilizations across cosmic time. From this viewpoint:

  • The universe is part of a larger cosmic structure

  • Knowledge evolves as consciousness evolves

  • Spiritual understanding progresses with time

Understanding the Supreme Authority

The teaching emphasizes recognizing the highest source of creation beyond limited forms.

It describes levels of cosmic authority:

  • Shiva as Creator of one solar system

  • Mahashiv as Creator of galaxy

  • Param Mahashiv as Creator of Universe

The ultimate goal is to recognize the supreme  Almighty Authority source and understand oneself as Atma (soul).

Importance of Self-Realization (Atma Gyan)

The discourse emphasizes:

  • First understand yourself as soul (Atma Swaroop)

  • Connect with the supreme source at  (Param Dham)

  • Increase inner spiritual power

  • Experience original purity of the soul

When a soul becomes aware of its original state, it understands: Where it came from, What its purpose is, Where it is progressing. Self-knowledge is considered essential for spiritual evolution.

Need for New Knowledge in a Changing World

It is suggested that a new world requires new knowledge.

Individuals are encouraged to:

  • Develop discrimination and wisdom

  • Explore deeper spiritual knowledge

  • Expand awareness beyond limited beliefs

  • Avoid narrow thinking

  • Dive into the ocean of knowledge

Just as a fish lives freely in the ocean, a seeker is encouraged to explore vast knowledge rather than remain confined to limited perspectives.

Transformation Through Vibrations of Peace

For global transformation, the discourse emphasizes changing personal vibrations. Peaceful thoughts and awareness influence the collective environment. By increasing knowledge and inner awareness, individuals can contribute to positive transformation of the world.

Conclusion

The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra symbolizes humanity’s quest for freedom from fear and suffering. While physical immortality is not considered possible in the material world, spiritual traditions emphasize achieving higher awareness and realization of the soul. Understanding cosmic time, the structure of the universe, and the journey of the soul encourages seekers to move toward self-knowledge. Through wisdom, awareness, and peaceful vibrations, individuals can contribute to the transformation of consciousness and the evolution of the world.
