10 Secrets of the Soul: Understanding the Origin, Journey, and Destiny of the Soul

The mystery of the soul has fascinated humanity for thousands of years. Spiritual traditions, scriptures, and sages have attempted to explain where the soul comes from, why it enters the physical world, and what its ultimate destiny is. According to spiritual teachings shared in this discourse, every human being should understand certain fundamental truths about the soul—its origin, its journey through different realms, and the possibility of liberation.

This article presents ten profound secrets of the soul, explaining its cosmic origin, the cycle of birth and death, and the path toward higher spiritual dimensions.

1. The Origin of the Soul

According to these teachings, the soul does not originate randomly. Its creation begins from the Supreme Consciousness, often described as the Supreme Being or Param Purush. In our universe, Lord Shiva created Brahma. Gradually, these beings created nature (Prakriti). From nature, the universe was created.

From this creation gradually unfolded. Higher divine beings emerged first and from them nature and the universe were manifested. As creation expanded, countless souls came into existence and began their journey through different dimensions of existence.

The earliest souls were extremely powerful and pure. These created beings also began creating other souls and eventually became deities. The deities continued creation, and the seven higher realms were formed.
From these realms, Earth was eventually created.

However, as cosmic cycles progressed over immense periods of time, the spiritual power of many souls gradually declined, leading them into lower realms and eventually into physical existence. Humans were created by the deities.

2. The Vast Age of the Universe and the Soul

Spiritual cosmology describes the universe as unimaginably ancient. According to this perspective, the history of our universe spans approximately 1,600 billion years. During this vast cosmic timeline, cycles of creation and destruction repeatedly occur. Each cosmic cycle is measured in terms of the lifespan of Brahma. One year of Brahma is said to equal 10.4 billion human years, illustrating the enormous scale of cosmic time. Over these vast periods, souls pass through many stages of evolution and transformation.

In the history of our universe, 50 years of Brahma have already passed. The second half of Brahma’s life is now continuing for about 1.98 billion years.

Is the Soul Truly Eternal?

The Gita says the soul is eternal. But here we explain that souls also have a beginning and an end within the cycle of the universe.  Scriptures mostly explain how the soul descends from higher states to human life. From Supreme Being → Deities → Humans → Lower realms. What is written in scriptures is correct, but the full cosmic history of the universe is extremely vast. The history of our universe spans about 1.6 trillion years.

After humans appeared on Earth, the cycle of birth and death began. Earlier, during the first long phase of creation, there was no birth and death. For 330 billion years, souls existed without this cycle.

3. Cycles of Creation and Destruction (Pralaya)

At the end of certain cosmic cycles, great transformations occur known as Pralaya, or cosmic dissolution.

Different levels of dissolution exist:

  • Pralaya, Ordinary dissolution, affecting specific worlds.

  • Kalpa Pralaya, where major cosmic structures collapse. after the 100 years of Brahma—the universe itself ends. At that time even Shiva’s power ends. Shiva enters the Sun and creates Mahakal Agni (Cosmic Fire). The entire universe burns and dissolves.  At that moment the souls of that universe also end.

  • Mahakal Pralaya, the ultimate dissolution of the universe.

During the final dissolution, divine cosmic fire (Mahakal Agni) consumes the universe. All physical structures and many souls dissolve back into the primordial source. Thus, while scriptures often describe the soul as eternal, these teachings explain that within a cosmic cycle the soul has both a beginning and an eventual dissolution. During these events, cosmic forces such as Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva play their roles. ust as our universe exists, Mahashiva governs infinite universes. Every universe has its own system of souls.

4. The Creation of Worlds and Realms

According to this spiritual cosmology, existence is structured into many layers or realms. Higher realms include:> Bhurlok>Bhuvarlok>Swarglok>Maharlok>Janlok>Taplok>Brahmapuri>Vishnupuri>Shivpuri> Paramdham

As souls descend through these realms, their spiritual power decreases and they eventually enter the physical world. In contrast, lower realms or hellish worlds also exist, formed as consequences of negative actions and declining consciousness.

When cosmic fire ignites through the twelve suns, the lower realms—are destroyed. Higher souls move to higher realms such as: Mahalok, anlok, Taplok. Lower souls may be destroyed.

5. The Cycle of 8.4 Million Life Forms

One of the most well-known concepts in spiritual traditions is the cycle of 8.4 million life forms (84 lakh yonis).

According to these teachings:

  • As the power of the soul declines through karmic actions,

  • it moves through different forms of life such as plants, animals, birds, and humans.

  • The journey is governed by karma, the universal law of cause and effect.

The soul automatically transitions through these forms depending on its actions and spiritual evolution.

6. Karma: The Law That Governs the Soul’s Journey

The reason souls become trapped in cycles of birth and death is karma. Every action leaves a subtle imprint on the soul. Positive actions elevate the soul, while negative actions pull it downward into suffering and lower states of existence. When the soul loses spiritual strength due to negative karma, it may descend into lower realms. However, through righteous actions and spiritual knowledge, it can regain its power and rise again.

7. The Journey from Mortal World to Immortal Realm

The soul’s ultimate journey is from the mortal world (Mrityu Lok) back toward the immortal realm (Amar Lok).

This journey occurs gradually:

  1. The soul gains self-knowledge.

  2. It recognizes that it is not the physical body but pure consciousness.

  3. Through spiritual practice and divine connection, it gains power.

  4. Gradually it ascends through higher realms.

Eventually the soul may move through Brahmapuri, Vishnupuri, Shivpuri, and finally toward the supreme spiritual dimension.

8. The Elements That Form the Soul

Not all souls are identical in their composition or spiritual quality. Higher-level souls are described as being formed from Param Light, a supreme spiritual energy. These souls possess great spiritual awareness and purity. Lower-level souls exist in different categories, including those associated with animal or bird forms. The level of spiritual refinement determines the consciousness and abilities of each soul.

9. Self-Realization: Experiencing the Soul

A human being can experience the true nature of the soul through self-realization.

However, this experience requires:

  • deep spiritual aspiration

  • understanding that the body is only a tool for action

  • recognizing one’s identity as a soul

  • connection with the Divine

Not every person seeks this knowledge. Many remain absorbed in worldly illusions, described as Mahamaya, the powerful illusion of material life. Only those who pursue knowledge and spiritual awakening move toward liberation.

10. Freedom from the Cycle of Birth and Death

The final secret of the soul is that liberation is possible. If a soul gains true knowledge, performs righteous actions, and reconnects with the divine source, it can move beyond the endless cycle of birth and death. However, this requires overcoming ignorance, illusion, and attachment to worldly existence. The path to liberation involves expanding one’s awareness beyond narrow thinking. A person should not remain like a frog in a well, limited by small understanding, but should become a fish in the vast ocean of knowledge. Through wisdom, meditation, and spiritual awareness, the soul can rediscover its true divine nature.

Final Message: Know Yourself and Transform the World

The ultimate message of these teachings is simple yet profound:

Every soul should ask three fundamental questions:

  • Who am I?

  • Where have I come from?

  • What is my purpose in this universe?

When a person discovers their true spiritual identity, they can transform their life and contribute to transforming the world. Real change begins with self-realization. By awakening to the true nature of the soul and reconnecting with its divine origin, humanity can move toward higher consciousness, wisdom, and universal harmony.
