Search the word guru today and you will drown in results. Every tradition has one. Every platform promotes one. Some give calm, some give discipline, some give a mantra, some give a following to belong to. The seeker is left with no way to tell the difference — and so wanders from one teacher to the next, each time hoping this is the one.
There is a way to tell the difference, and it has nothing to do with how many people are listening. A Guru is not measured by his crowd. He is measured by how far his knowledge actually reaches — and by whether that knowledge finally hands the seeker over to the Supreme, or quietly keeps him at the teacher's own feet.
The short answer
A real Guru is recognised by knowledge, not by following. He answers who you are, where you came from and where you are going; establishes that you are the Atma and not the body; gives direct experience rather than theory alone; explains karma as a mechanism; teaches the way out of birth and death; connects you to the Supreme; maps the whole Brahmand rather than one region of it; never sells the knowledge; lives as he teaches; and finally points beyond himself. The last is decisive — a false Guru keeps you with him, a true Guru delivers you onward.
What follows are ten signs, ordered so that each one cuts deeper than the last. They are not sectarian. They can be applied to any teacher, in any tradition, anywhere in the world — including the one you follow now, and including Bapuji himself. A test is worth nothing if it is not applied evenly. Every soul that turns inward eventually arrives at the same three questions: Who am I? Where have I come from? Where do I have to go? These are not poetic questions. They are structural ones, and they have precise answers.
A real Guru exists to carry the seeker through all three. A teacher who can soothe you, motivate you, or give you a practice — but cannot tell you what you are, which dimension you descended from, or where you are actually headed — may be an honest guide within one tradition. He is not a complete Guru.

आत्मा का ज्ञानHe Teaches That You Are the Atma, Not the Body
This is the first thing a Guru must establish, and he must establish it until it becomes conviction rather than information. You are not the body. You are not the mind. You are the Atma — a point of conscious light, eternal and indestructible, which has worn many bodies and will wear more.
Where this is absent, everything built on top of it is temporary. A teaching that improves the personality but never touches the question of what is wearing the personality has not begun the work.

आत्म-स्वरूप का अनुभवHe Gives Experience, Not Only Theory
Understanding that you are a soul and experiencing yourself as one are separated by a great distance. A real Guru does not leave the seeker on the near side of it. He leads him into the actual felt realisation of Atma Swaroop — the soul's own original form — in which body-consciousness genuinely falls away, if only for a moment.
That first moment is the real initiation. It requires no ceremony, no fee and no lineage. It is the instant the seeker stops saying "I have a soul" and says instead "I am a soul."

Karma is not a moral slogan and not a punishment system. It is a mechanism. A real Guru explains precisely how thought, word and action deposit sanskar in the soul, how those impressions harden into bondage, how bondage draws the soul into its next birth — and, crucially, by what process it is dissolved.
Anyone can say "you reap what you sow." Very few can explain the machinery, and fewer still can teach how to unwind it.

Most spiritual teaching, examined honestly, is about living more comfortably inside the cycle — less stress, better sleep, steadier relationships. Valuable, but not liberating.
A real Guru teaches Mukti: how the soul steps out of the cycle altogether and returns to its source. He teaches Jeevan Mukti too — how to live free while still in the body, carrying out every worldly duty without accumulating new bondage. The difference between coping and liberation is the difference between a good teacher and a Guru.

This is the point at which most teachings quietly stop. They speak of energy, of the universe, of consciousness in the abstract — but they never introduce the seeker to the Almighty Authority itself, and never establish a direct working connection with it.
Bapuji uses a plain image. A human Guru, however sincere, is at best a battery. He carries some charge and can pass some of it on. But a battery runs out. The Supreme is the powerhouse. Why connect to a battery when the powerhouse is open?

बेहद ज्ञान — पूरी रचनाHe Explains the Whole Brahmand, Not One Region of It
Here is the principle that governs everything above, and it is uncomfortable: a Guru can only give what he has himself realised. A teacher whose realisation reaches Swargaloka can teach up to Swargaloka. One who has reached Mahalok can teach up to Mahalok. Each is entirely truthful within his own range — and completely unable to hand over what lies above it.
This is why so many traditions each hold a coherent, sincere, partial picture of reality, and why they disagree. It is also why the seeker's ceiling is set by his teacher's ceiling. A real Guru maps the whole structure — the lokas, the Brahmand, the Multiverse beyond it, and Paramdham above all — rather than one deity, one ritual, one region.

ज्ञान बिकता नहींHe Never Sells the Knowledge
Fixed prices for mantras. A fee to become a disciple. Higher fees for higher levels of teaching. Wherever this structure appears, the knowledge has already been converted into a product, and the relationship into a transaction.
Spiritual knowledge belongs to every soul by birthright. It is not the private property of any teacher, and it cannot be bought or sold. Reasonable costs for food, travel or printing are one thing. A price list for access to truth is another.

A teacher who preaches detachment from a position of visible opulence has already told you which side he actually believes in. The contradiction itself is the test — you do not need inside information to see it.
Wealth alone is not the marker, and this deserves care. Genuine institutions receive donations and must run schools, kitchens and printing presses. The question is not whether money passes through, but where it settles, and whether the teacher's own life quietly contradicts the words he speaks from the stage.

Every sign above can be imitated for a while. This one cannot.
Watch where a teacher finally sends you. A real Guru is a bridge between the Atma and Paramatma — and the whole purpose of a bridge is to be crossed and left behind. The moment the soul is connected to the Supreme, his work is finished, and he is content that it is finished. He wants a knower, not a follower. A follower repeats; a knower understands. A follower needs a master at every step; a knower stands on his own.
A false teacher does the opposite. Slowly, warmly, often without ever saying it aloud, he arranges the devotion so that it settles on his own person and stays there. The first sign of falseness is a teacher who makes himself the destination.

The same test read backwards. None of these is proof on its own — but where several appear together, the seeker should look very carefully.

One caution, and it matters. Bapuji describes these as patterns and deliberately refuses to attach names to them. That restraint is part of the teaching, not an omission from it. The purpose of a test is to hand the seeker an instrument, not to hand him a verdict about somebody else. Apply it yourself, quietly, to whoever stands in front of you.

Born 1956 in Akhaj village, Mehsana district, Gujarat. A successful lawyer in early life who left the profession for a single question he had carried since childhood — the actual structure of creation, and the soul's place within it. He founded Vishwa Parivartak Ishwariya Vidhyalay at Chenpur, Ahmedabad, in 1997, and gave discourses for as long as eighteen hours at a stretch. His teaching, Behad Ka Param Gyan, maps the Atma, karma, the lokas, the Brahmand and the Multiverse beyond it. He has never charged for a single teaching.
