Episode 377, How to Deal with Criticism in an Effective Manner

– Why Criticism Hurts So Much

Criticism is one of the few experiences that every human being faces, no matter how successful, spiritual, or sincere they are. In fact, the higher a person rises in life, the more criticism they attract. Leaders, saints, reformers, innovators, and even divine figures like Lord Rama and Lord Krishna were criticized—so how can ordinary people expect to escape it?

In today’s digital age, criticism is everywhere—social media, YouTube comments, workplace gossip, family discussions, and even spiritual communities. One negative remark is enough to disturb our mood, reduce our confidence, and break our focus. That is why learning how to deal with criticism is not optional—it is essential for inner peace, success, and spiritual growth.

Why People Criticize

People criticize for different reasons:

  • Jealousy – They cannot tolerate your growth.

  • Insecurity – Your progress reminds them of their own stagnation.

  • Ignorance – They don’t understand what you are doing.

  • Fear of change – New ideas disturb their comfort zone.

  • Habit – Some people get emotional pleasure from finding faults in others.

In India and many cultures, backbiting has become a form of entertainment. People feel powerful by pulling others down. But such criticism says more about the critic than about the person being criticized.

A Powerful Truth About Criticism

There is a famous saying:

“If people are talking about you, it means you are doing something significant.”

If you go to the temple daily, people will say you are too religious.
If you stop going, they will say you have become irreligious.
If you succeed, they will call you arrogant.
If you fail, they will call you useless.

So no matter what you do, someone will criticize you. That is why the goal is not to avoid criticism—but to rise above it.

Constructive vs Destructive Criticism

Criticism comes in two forms:

1. Constructive Criticism

  • Given directly

  • Aims to help you improve

  • Comes with logic or suggestions

  • Comes from people who genuinely care

This type should be welcomed. It is a gift.

2. Destructive Criticism

  • Hurtful, insulting, or mocking

  • Given behind your back

  • Based on jealousy or negativity

  • Designed to disturb your peace

This type must be ignored or handled with wisdom.

The Three Levels of Handling Criticism

To deal with criticism effectively, you must handle it on three levels:

1. Emotional Level – Stay Calm

The first reaction to criticism is emotional pain. It feels like someone slapped your self-respect. Anger, sadness, and frustration rise instantly.

But reacting emotionally only harms you.

When someone criticizes you:

  • Do not reply immediately.

  • Take a breath.

  • Let the emotion settle.

Calmness is power.

2. Rational Level – Is It True?

Ask yourself honestly:

  • Is there any truth in what they are saying?

  • Can I improve from this?

If yes, thank them mentally and improve.
If no, then their words are meaningless noise.

A judge once said:

“Those who lose cases abuse me, those who win praise me. I let my pen do the talking.”

Your work should speak louder than words.

3. Practical Level – Does It Really Matter?

Ask:

  • Does this criticism change my purpose?

  • Does it stop me from doing my duty?

  • Does it affect my spiritual growth?

If not, then it deserves no attention.

The Story of Vishwamitra and Vashishta

Vishwamitra, a powerful yogi, once wanted to kill Sage Vashishta. But one night he overheard Vashishta telling his wife: “At this time, no yogi is greater than Vishwamitra. If he gives up his anger, he will become the greatest of all.” This praise melted Vishwamitra’s heart. He dropped his hatred and surrendered. That one inner change transformed him into a Brahmarshi. This story teaches us:

When you let go of anger and ego, your destiny changes.

Gulshan Kumar – A Real-Life Example of Courage

In 1997, Gulshan Kumar was threatened by a gangster demanding 10 crores. He refused and instead donated money to God’s work. He was killed—but his courage made him immortal.

Today, people still remember him. His company, T-Series, dominates YouTube. Those who walk the path of truth may face criticism, but their legacy lives forever.

Inner Peace Is the Ultimate Shield

A person who has true inner peace cannot be shaken by criticism.

Lord Vishnu, when tested by a sage who kicked him, did not react with anger. Instead he asked:

“Did your foot get hurt?”

This is the highest level of consciousness.

When anger and bitterness leave your heart, criticism loses its power over you.

Criticism and Spiritual Growth

Criticism tests:

  • Your patience

  • Your ego

  • Your faith

  • Your inner strength

If you remain calm, focused, and peaceful, you rise to a higher vibration. This is true yoga—not just sitting and watching thoughts, but connecting to the Supreme through stillness.

Final Message

Criticism is unavoidable. Peace is a choice. Let dogs bark. Let the elephant walk. Do your duty. Improve yourself. Stay connected to your inner light. And move forward with courage. When divine peace fills your heart, no insult, no comment, no gossip can disturb you.

That is the real victory.
